Kurt Mayo is a private guitar/bass & fretted string instrument instructor/teacher, performer and luthier with over 40 years in the business, located in Manhattan Beach and Torrance, CA.
Kurt teaches fulltime in Torrance, Ca, is an El Camino & Cal State L.A. alumni, member of the Guild of American Luthiers since 1988, and a charter member of the Association of String Instrument Artisans since 1988. He has taught Master Classes at El Camino CC and is a vendor (Luthier/Amp repair) for L.A. Harbor College.
Past students include 2 Song of the Year Recipients (1983 & 2011) and one grammy nomination.
I break down the study of the guitar into 3 categories:
- Note Reading (with and without tab) lessons
- Chord and Rhythm Studies (including flat-picking & finger-picking lessons)
- Lead Improvising Instruction
Also, on the guitar you can only play 3 types of note combinations:
chords, scales, and arpeggios. The study of
which are all included in the above 3 categories.
Additionally, ear training is most important. A
musician will only be
as good as his/her ear! Vocalizing and singing best develops the ear.
Songs (with student input) are utilized in the above studies.
Instruments Taught: Acoustic & Electric Guitar
(traditional 6 & 12 String), Electric Bass, All Ukuleles, Banjos, Autoharps, and Mandolins.
Style Taught: Instruction in Folk-Rock-Country-Blues, Jazz to Jazz Rock,
Solo Guitar, Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist, Lead Improvising, Flat-picking and Finger-Picking.
